Insects on Christmas Trees

For many families, part of the joy of holidays is bringing a live, fresh-cut evergreen tree into the house to decorate.  It is a long-standing tradition to have this small part of the natural, outdoor world in our homes at this time of year.  However, it is not uncommon that too much of the "real" world comes in with the trees, nor should it be unexpected.

The two pests most commonly found on fresh cut trees are aphids and spiders.  In both cases, adults that were on the trees back in late summer or fall laid eggs on the stems or foliage.  These eggs should remain dormant through the winter, but they hatch when they become warmed by heat within the house.  Newly hatched insects and spiderlings are very small and in many cases, they will wander a very short distance before they die either by starvation or drying out.

When selecting your Christmas tree, shake the tree to see if the needles are firmly attached.  While you can expect some loss of brown needles, don't accept the tree if you notice an excessive amount.  Always check for insects and dead needles inside the tree crown.  Once you have picked out your perfect tree, have dead needles and insects shaken or blown out of the tree before you take it inside to decorate.  Have fun!!

The 12 Bugs of Christmas

Here's a new twist on an old favorite:

On the Twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me:  12 Bees a Buzzing, 11 Tarantulas Crawling, 10 Fleas a Leaping, 9 Ladybugs Dancing, 8 Termites Tunneling, 7 Scorpions Stinging, 6 Praying Mantis', 5 Ring Worms, 4 Chirping Crickets, 3 Fruit Flies, 2 Stink Bugs and an Aphid on a Pear Tree.

The Night Before Christmas by Stephanie Bailey

T'was the night before Christmas and throughout the house, lots of creatures were stirring, not the least was a mouse.

Our stockings were hung by the chimney with care, we all hoped the roaches would just leave them there.

I tucked in the kids, they were snug in their beds, but had visions of lice crawling up on their heads.

Ma in her kerchief and I in my cap, had just reset all of our sure-catch mousetraps.

Suddenly, outside quite a racket ensued, but above all the noise I could make out a dude.

He called out strange names such as Dancer and Blitzen, I'd swear I was having acute toxic symptoms!

From the roof we heard sounds of skids, bumps and twirls.  I turned and said, "Dear, we have got MUTANT squirrels!"

The next thing I knew, as I sorted it out,  Some guy in a red suit slid down the rain spout.

"That chimney of yours", he said with a grin, "is so full of birds I can't even get in."

"I've come to help with your pests that won't die. Now, don't you worry, I've been certified!"

The man came prepared, I could see from his sack.   His baits, sprays and foam were all poised for attack.

He spoke not a word but with all the right moves, Had pest-proofed our home not a minute too soon.

He left us instructions for future distress, though his awesome skills, I shall never possess.

He shook my hand, then returned to his sleigh, Checked his reindeer for fleas, then he went on his way .

But I heard him exclaim as they flew out of sight, Merry Christmas to all....don't let the bedbugs bite!

Safety Tips

  1. Place candles in an open spot and never leave unattended
  2. If you have a fresh tree, keep it watered so it won't dry out as quickly
  3. Don't overload electrical outlets
